Battle of the Island

History of the Battle

On Nelson Island kevgiqs, or physical fights, were very common. When someone was invited from Stebbins to a feast with a St. Michaelian, they would follow up with an impromptu race. They would run around their sod house three times touching the posts.

Then they would crawl back into the house, the last one to crawl in the house is considered weak. The villages often tried to pick out the fastest runners from both villages.

Our Battle of the Island has started off brilliantly for Stebbins!  With an overwhelming victory in the cross-country battle, we will be facing the Storm in volleyball on a date to be determined in November on the Saint Michael home court.
