About Stebbins

The coastal village of Stebbins, Alaska (population ±500) is located on the northwest corner of St. Michael Island in southern Norton Sound.  Only 280 miles across the Bering Sea from Russia, its proximity to Siberia is evident in the culture and traditions of the local people.  About 98% of Stebbins residents are Central Yup'ik Eskimo. The Yup'ik name for the village is Tapraq.

Tukurngailnguq School provides K-12 education, and the adjacent preschool prepares 3 and 4 year-olds for full time school. In addition, Stebbins has a store, medical clinic, several churches, a community center and post office.  Many residents rely on subsistence living in the tradition of their ancestors, surviving on fish, game, plants and berries found in the surrounding ocean, rivers and tundra, and bartering for other needed supplies.

A small airfield on the south end of town allows only small bush aircraft and is the main gateway into and out of Stebbins; although it is possible to access the island by boat or barge in the warmer months and by snow machine when the ocean is frozen.
