Show Me Your Grizzly Roar! The Tukurngailnguq Grizzlies are off to a roaring great start for the 2017-18 school year!

Once again the Stebbins community came together to launch the new school year off right. After a community coffee hour and breakfast, parents, elders, staff, and student gathered in the school gym to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Yup’ik and English, and receive a welcome message from Principal John Juvinall and Assistant Principal Betty Hall.

This school year brings some changes in schedules, routines, and standards, but most importantly brings a brand new reading emphasis for all grade levels. In particular there are new structures to reinforce foundational reading in lower grade levels. “We’ve been very intentional about the changes we’ve made and are particularly focused on improving reading,” said Assistant Principal Betty Hall. “We’ve invested in resources to improve reading fluency, added certified staff to assist daily in small reading groups in grades K-6, and created a reading incentive program to foster a lifelong love of reading in all of our students.”

The new systems are already showing results. In the first two weeks of school, for instance, tardies are down 35% from last year. The new emphasis on reading is also paying dividends with students checking out 50% more books from the school library than the same time last year.

Now, in the third week of school, Principal Juvinall is pleased and proud of the students. “The kids have really stepped up to the plate. We’ve tossed a few changes at them and they’ve shown that they can handle it. They’re coming to school with good attitudes and a willingness to learn. That’s what we’re asking for – come to school with a positive attitude and a good night’s sleep.” He winks and smiles. “The first couple weeks have been smooth – we’re looking forward to getting better and better.”
